Swap-Free Accounts: What Replaces the Swap

A swap-free account removes the overnight interest charge, but the broker usually recovers that cost another way.

The swap is the interest built into holding a position overnight

When you hold a forex position past the daily cut-off, most brokers apply a swap: a small credit or debit tied to the interest rate difference between the two currencies you are trading. It is not a commission and it is not a spread. It is the cost of carrying the position while you sleep, and it appears on your statement as a separate line.

For traders who keep positions open for days or weeks, that line adds up quietly. It also raises a religious problem for some Muslim traders, because the swap is essentially interest, and interest is not permitted under Islamic finance. A swap-free account, sometimes called an Islamic account, exists to remove that charge.

A figure with no source and no date is a guess with good manners. Anything we could not trace is left out rather than printed from memory.

Removing the swap does not remove the broker's cost

A broker who lends you leverage overnight still has a funding cost of its own. When the swap is switched off, that cost does not vanish; it moves. The common replacements are a wider spread on the affected pairs, a fixed administration fee charged per night on positions held past the cut-off, or a separate service charge on the account. Some brokers use a combination.

This is why a swap-free account is not automatically cheaper. If you open and close trades within the same session, the swap would rarely have applied to you anyway, so a wider spread is a pure loss. If you hold for weeks, the swap-free version may well cost less. The right choice depends on your holding period, not on the label.

Brokers usually also ask for proof of address; requirements differ per firm. The account-opening page of the broker lists what that firm accepts.

Sharia compliance is a claim you should verify, not assume

An account marketed as Islamic should be structured so that no interest is paid or received, and the broker should be able to explain how the replacement charge avoids riba. That explanation varies widely. Some brokers publish a religious advisory board or a certification; others simply rename the account. The word "swap-free" on a sign-up page is not proof of anything by itself.

Read the client agreement and the funding page, and look for the specific clause that describes the overnight charge. If the document says only that swaps are removed, without saying what replaces them, ask support in writing. A broker that cannot answer clearly is telling you something useful.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search the legal entity from the broker's own footer, not the brand.

How this fits the Ghanaian regulatory picture

The SEC Ghana licensee register, published at sec.gov.gh, lists seventeen categories of licensed operator, and an online or leveraged forex broker is not one of them. A firm offering that service to Ghanaian residents is therefore working under a licence issued somewhere else. That does not make every such firm dishonest, but it does mean your protection comes from the offshore regulator and from the broker's own terms, not from SEC Ghana.

Practical steps: confirm the offshore regulator named in the agreement, read the swap-free clause before funding, and check the broker's funding page for how deposits and withdrawals move through MTN Mobile Money, Telecel Cash, AirtelTigo Money, bank transfer or card. Test a withdrawal early, in a small amount, before you commit more.

The day you open the account is the day to ask how the broker replaces the swap

Swap-free accounts are usually offered alongside standard ones, so the replacement cost is often buried in the account type you choose at sign-up rather than explained separately. Ask the broker in writing, before funding, which charge replaces the overnight swap on your account. Keep the reply, because it becomes your reference point if the costs later look different from what you expected.

In Ghana, that written answer matters because support is often handled across time zones while you are on GMT. A question sent in the morning may be answered overnight, so the account may already be live before you read the reply. Open the account, but do not fund it until the replacement charge is confirmed in writing. Funding first removes your leverage in the conversation.

The order of operations is simple. Ask, get the answer in writing, compare it with the standard account's published costs, then decide. Readers who reverse that order, funding first and asking later, usually find the broker has no reason to change anything. The published costs on the broker's own pages are the ones that count, not what a chat agent says informally.

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. The licence question is answered on the register, not in the app store.

A swap-free label can hide a wider spread rather than a separate line item

Some brokers do not charge an explicit overnight fee on swap-free accounts. Instead, the cost is folded into the pricing you pay each time you open a position. That is not automatically wrong, but it means the account can look free while being more expensive per trade than the standard version. The label describes what is missing, not what you actually pay.

The practical consequence is that comparing accounts on the overnight charge alone tells you very little. Compare the total cost of holding a position for the time you normally hold it, using the broker's published pricing. If the broker publishes a spread table, read it beside the swap-free terms. If it does not publish one, that absence is itself information worth weighing.

This is also why screenshots of other people's swap-free accounts are not useful evidence. Pricing differs by account type, by instrument and by the broker's own commercial choices. What matters is the document that applies to your account, in your name, from the broker you are actually using. Anything else is someone else's arrangement.

Holding overnight in a swap-free account still carries non-interest costs

Removing the swap removes one charge, not every cost of holding a position open. Overnight positions still expose you to price movement while you sleep, and in Ghana that window runs through the hours when you cannot easily react. A position opened in the evening sits unattended until morning local time. The swap-free structure does not change that exposure at all.

There is also the question of when your broker's trading day rolls over, which may not match your own evening. Rollover timing is set by the broker, and the swap-free account does not move it. If you are holding positions across that moment, the replacement charge applies according to the broker's schedule, not yours. Check the broker's published rollover time rather than assuming it lines up with midnight in Accra.

Practically, this means a swap-free account suits a particular kind of holding period and not others. If you rarely hold overnight, the swap-free structure may change very little for you. If you hold for days, the replacement cost compounds in a way a single trade does not reveal. Match the account type to how you actually trade, not to how the label sounds.

What should slow you down

A fixed monthly return, promised in advance
Ask which licence permits it, then look the firm up on the SEC Ghana licensed operators list.
A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchers
Check the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers.
Someone offering to trade the account for you
Managing money for a client is a separate permission. The register says whether a firm holds it.
A withdrawal released only after a new payment
Read the withdrawal terms you agreed to. A fee invented at payout time is not in them.

None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at sec.gov.gh.

Your funding method and your account type are separate decisions

Ghanaian traders often fund through MTN Mobile Money, with Telecel Cash, AirtelTigo Money, bank transfer and card also in use. None of these rails determines whether your account is swap-free. The account type is a product choice made with the broker; the funding method is a payments choice made with your wallet or bank. Treating them as one decision is a common confusion.

That separation matters when something goes wrong. A delayed Mobile Money deposit is a payments issue, resolved through the MTN Mobile Money app or the broker's funding page. A swap-free account that charges something you did not expect is a product issue, resolved with the broker's terms. Mixing the two in one support ticket usually slows both down.

Keep the records apart as well. Your Mobile Money confirmation shows money moved. Your account statement shows what the broker did with it. When you query a charge, the broker will ask for the transaction reference, so keep those confirmations rather than deleting them after the deposit lands. The MTN app keeps a history you can return to.

If the broker cannot explain the replacement clearly, that is your answer

A broker that offers a swap-free account should be able to state, plainly and in writing, what replaces the swap. If the answer is vague, shifts between conversations, or points only to a general terms document with no specific clause, treat that as a signal. It does not prove wrongdoing, but it does mean you cannot evaluate the account before using it. That is a poor position to start from.

You can check the firm's regulatory status separately through the SEC Ghana licensed operators list at sec.gov.gh. That check tells you whether the firm appears on the public list. It does not tell you whether the swap-free terms are fair, and it does not endorse the product. The two questions are different, and both are worth asking before you commit funds.

If the explanation never becomes clear, the reasonable step is to use a standard account or a different firm rather than proceed on assumption. Nothing about a swap-free label obliges you to accept terms you cannot read. The decision is yours, and it is easier to make before funding than after.

Is a swap-free account always cheaper than a standard one?

No. The swap is replaced by something, usually a wider spread or a nightly administration fee. If you close trades within the same session, you would rarely have paid a swap, so the replacement cost is a net loss. If you hold positions for many days, the swap-free version can work out cheaper. Compare the two using your own typical holding period.

How do I know if an Islamic account is genuinely Sharia compliant?

Ask the broker to explain, in writing, how the replacement charge avoids interest, and look for a named advisory board or certification in the account documents. A page that only says swaps are removed, without describing the substitute, is not enough. If support cannot give you a clear answer, treat that as a warning sign.

Does SEC Ghana regulate swap-free forex accounts?

The SEC Ghana licensed operators list at sec.gov.gh covers seventeen categories, and online or leveraged forex brokerage is not among them. A broker serving Ghanaian residents in that way is operating under a licence from another country. Check that regulator and read the broker's own terms, because that is where your recourse sits.

Trading forex and CFDs on margin carries a high risk of losing more than you deposit. Most retail accounts lose money. Nothing on this page is financial advice.
